LIBERAL STUDIES NEWSLETTER WINTER 2004

We try to provide valuable information for you. Please take the time to read it.

GEOFF COHEN has joined Liberal Studies & Interdisciplinary Programs as the Academic Coordinator (A2417 HMNSS Bldg). He comes to us from UCR's English Department where he has been teaching American Literature and Composition. While his primary responsibilities are with curriculum and program development, he is also available to talk with majors. “My primary goals are to find ways to make the current programs more vibrant and to establish new concentrations such as Communications and Digital Arts,” Cohen said, “I also would like to establish a Liberal Studies Student Club to organize events and strengthen the community.”

ATTENTION!!! THERE ARE IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE BRIDGE TO TEACHING PROGRAM: Due to the federal NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT all multiple-subject teachers must be “highly qualified” in all core academic subject areas. This legislation requires all elementary teachers who are new to the profession on or after July 1, 2002 to demonstrate subject matter competence by a passing a “rigorous (this is the NCLB term) exam” in order to be designated a “highly qualified teacher”. An approved subject matter preparation program can no longer waiver this exam . In California , the required exam is the California Subject Exam for Teachers (CSET). We recommend that you continue to participate in the Bridge to Teaching Program in order to be prepared to teach the required subjects and to have the best preparation for the CEST.
